Frequently Asked Questions We are an NHS Partnership like most other GP-run practices in the UK. We just got bigger. Our roots can be traced back to the beginning of the NHS in 1947 but unlike many of the private organisations now entering the NHS we are not a company who answer to shareholders. The Hurley Group has four partners who are all GPs, and are assisted by a large team of senior GPs, nurses and managers in the running of the Group. Until five years ago, the only practice in the Group was the Hurley Clinic in Kennington, South London which has cared for thousands of patients over 60 years including Prime Ministers and served as a training practice for many GPs. In 2005, we opened a second practice called Riverside Medical Centre to cater for a number of new developments along the River Thames. We also became involved in helping two local single-handed GP colleagues with their practices. We won our first GP contract to run a small practice in Peckham in 2006. Each of the partners spent a day a week working in this practice for a year to understand how to turnaround the care of patients. The skills and experience we gained in these practices have given us the confidence to take on new challenges but never at a rate that would compromise the quality of care we continue to provide. We also only bid for NHS practices that play to our strengths in dealing with deprived communities and often do not bid for surgeries which we feel would provide better patient care if served by a good local practice. We care for patients in six London boroughs and have 70,000 patients registered at our 15 NHS sites. Every year, 110,000 patients attend one of our walk in centres or minor injury facilities. Our team is now over 280 strong and includes GPs, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Managers, Administration and Reception staff. Unusually for a GP service, we employ other professional groups such as pharmacists, paramedics and even school teachers who provide educational guidance on health issues in local schools. We also work closely with people from over 20 other services who work alongside our staff at our sites. We have a contract with the Department of Health to look after the welfare of every doctor and dentist living or working in London. We also provide a substance misuse service to homeless patients in Westminster and a GP service to those in homeless shelters and asylum seekers in East London (see: Services) The Hurley Group offer quality care. We operate an internal performance monitoring at each site to ensure the service we offer to patients is as good as it can be. This includes access indicators and an examination of the range and quality of all our services. We even mystery shop our sites. The Hurley Group works closely with local Gps to ensure the services we offer are integrated into the local primary care landscape. We do not simply cherry pick the easiest services but have become known for taking on some of the most difficult clinical challenges. We target deprived communities and vulnerable patient groups. Ideally, we would like you to stay with one surgery but you are free to use any of our 15 practices at London. You also have access to a number of walk in clinics that are open from 8am-8pm 365 days a year, whether or not you are registered with a Hurley Group practice. (See: New Cross GP Walk in Centre & Harold Wood GP Walk in Centre) We also offer online registration at our practices so that when you attend your first appointment you will only be asked to bring a proof of address with you. If you would like to book ahead, appointments are offered up to one month in advance.
